What better way to end a semester than making a child’s most fervent wish come true? Students, staff, and the community at Daniel Boone Elementary raised money throughout the school year for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, to fulfill a wish for a child named Thomas. What’s his wish? The same as many other children; to go to Disney World and meet Mickey Mouse! On Wednesday, May 17, students, staff, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation gathered in the gymnasium to present Thomas and his family with a check for $5,000, which will cover all of their expenses for the trip to Disney World. The students and the community stepped up to make this wish a reality for Thomas.

Thomas is a five-year-old boy who was diagnosed with an Anaplastic Wilms Tumor, the most common form of kidney cancer found in children, in November of 2015. After he was diagnosed, he began an intensive 30-week radiation chemotherapy plan. Even though it was a very tough battle, Thomas fought through it, and is now in remission.

“This has been a year-long process. We could not have better support from our community, staff, and the Raccoons Giving Back (RGB) Club,” said RGB Club sponsor Chad Millard. “To raise money, we’ve had a car wash, star donations, and other efforts from our RGB club. The school has done so much to make sure that we can fully fund Thomas’ trip to Disney World, and to meet Mickey Mouse.”

The mission of the Make-A-Wish Foundation is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich their experiences with joy, strength, and hope. The St. Louis chapter of the organization was founded in 1983 and since then, they have granted over 5,000 wishes in Missouri.

“I’m amazed at all of the hard work the students put in to grant Thomas’ wish,” said Make-A-Wish Development Manager Alisha Abbot. “It’s because of them and their community that we’re able to make his wish come to life.”
